Bio

Matthew Sigman is a writer and editor who specializes in the performing arts. He is a three-time winner of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for Music Journalism and has contributed features, interviews, criticism, and commentary to Symphony, Opera News, American Theatre, Chorus America, Opera America, and National Public Radio’s Performance Today. His comments and commentary have appeared in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.

Matthew’s latest project, Because of a Dog: How an Enchanted Italian Village Mended a Broken Heart, is slated to be published by Sourcebooks and distributed by Penguin Random House in August 2026. Described in Publishers Marketplace as “a humorous and uplifting memoir,” Because of a Dog reminds us of the important role pets play in our lives and the unexpected gifts that life can bring when you open yourself to adventure.

Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Matthew received his bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University, where he wrote music and theater reviews for The Georgetown Voice. After graduation, he began writing for Symphony magazine, rising from staff writer to editor-in-chief. Smitten by the possibilities of digital media in its formative years, he pivoted from editorial to production via an MBA from The Wharton School. He went on to pioneer digital technologies for book and magazine publishers through leadership positions at R.R. Donnelley, Thomson Learning, WRC Media, and Reader’s Digest. Throughout his corporate career in publishing he continued to maintain his career as a freelance writer for the arts.

Matthew is equally proud of his past “side gigs” as a Barnes & Noble musicseller (specializing in classical music) and bookseller (specializing in educational and children’s books). An avid traveler, serious amateur chef, and ferocious Scrabbler, he is a devotee of classic films and silly sitcoms. He lives in New York City’s West Village.

Because of a dog

When Matthew Sigman's beloved dog, Augie, died, his world fell apart. His boyfriend broke up with him. His work dried up. Even the ceiling of his West Village apartment collapsed. Heartbroken and adrift, Matthew did the only thing he could―he ran.

An impulsive escape to Europe didn't lead to the cafés of Paris or the islands of Greece. Instead, thanks to a fluke in an Airbnb map, he landed in Quarna, a remote Italian mountain village seemingly hidden from tourists―and from time itself. There, amid winding cobblestone streets and alpine silence, Matthew stumbled into an unlikely friendship and madcap adventures with an exuberant innkeeper, Valerio, and discovered the warmth of a community that welcomed him as one of their own.

In Because of a Dog, Matthew traces a journey from profound grief to unexpected renewal, from isolation to connection. With wit, poignancy, and hard-won insight, this memoir is a reminder that sometimes, when all seems lost, it takes a village to mend a broken heart.

Because of a Dog is scheduled for release on August 11, 2026 and can be purchased at your favorite independent bookstore. Meanwhile, it can be pre-ordered at these online retailers:
